Investigation into the Disappearance of Nancy Guthrie
The investigation surrounding the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, an 84-year-old mother of NBC’s “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, is being led by a highly experienced law enforcement officer, Sheriff Chris Nanos. He has, quite impressively, accumulated nearly 50 years of experience in policing.
As noted in his official biography, Sheriff Nanos began his law enforcement career with the El Paso Police Department in Texas back in 1976. He transitioned to Pima County as a jailer in 1984, quickly moving up the ranks to become a deputy the very next year.
Throughout the following thirty years, Sheriff Nanos developed his expertise in tackling violent crimes, sex crimes, and drug-related offenses. By 2012, he took on the role of director of investigations, and in 2014, he became chief of staff.
Interestingly, his resume reveals a commitment to community service beyond law enforcement, reflected in his past roles with the Boys & Girls Club of Tucson and as a director at the Southern Arizona Child Advocacy Center. He has also been recognized for his involvement in organizations like the Special Olympics and has worked closely with community groups.
In 2015, Nanos was appointed sheriff of Pima County. Although he faced a loss in his 2016 election bid, he successfully reclaimed his position in 2020 with a narrow victory over his Republican challenger. His most recent election was also quite contentious, with a razor-thin margin that raised some eyebrows and led to a recount.
Controversy seems to shadow his tenure; for example, he reportedly placed some opponents on administrative leave during the lead-up to the 2024 elections, igniting further disputes. A deputy even filed a lawsuit against him, claiming his First Amendment rights were violated during this period.
As he manages a workforce of about 1,500 employees and 400 volunteers, serving a diverse community in a sprawling county, Nanos finds himself in the midst of a critical investigation that has now extended into its fifth day. Details are scarce about the investigation itself, and authorities have generally refrained from publicly revealing the suspect’s identity. They have acknowledged the potential for ransom demands to surface, indicating that the situation is quite serious.
Current information regarding the search for Nancy Guthrie remains limited, with law enforcement remaining tight-lipped as they navigate the complexities of this high-profile case.
