Trump Stands by Homeland Security Secretary Amid Criticism
President Donald Trump has dismissed suggestions to dismiss Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem amid growing scrutiny over the department’s immigration policies.
During an interview at the National Prayer Breakfast, he responded to inquiries about Noem’s position. Trump expressed confusion over the suggestion. “Why would you do that? Our borders are the strongest in this country’s history,” he stated.
“Look, she was in charge of the border. The border is closed. I mean, everyone is giving me an A+ at the border,” Trump asserted. “The border was a disaster. People were coming into our country.”
When pressed about Noem’s ability to realize his immigration vision, Trump defended her performance, stating, “Crime rates in our country are the highest they’ve been in 125 years. I think she’s doing a very good job. Again, it’s public relations. Her work is not appreciated.”
Despite questions shifting to other topics, Trump reiterated his support. “But the sad thing is… there were two incidents in Minnesota, two major incidents,” he added, hinting at recent shootings involving individuals connected to immigration enforcement.
“You arrest thousands of rapists. You arrest thousands of the worst people. You arrest drug dealers. I mean, we had drug lords. We had murderers. Thousands, no problem,” Trump said, emphasizing the complexities surrounding law enforcement actions.
Though he expressed discontent with the recent incidents, he maintained his backing of law enforcement. “Well, look, I’m not happy with the two incidents… It’s not one or the other,” he remarked, indicating the challenging nature of the situations.
“I think they were both sad,” Trump reflected, showing some empathy for those involved, particularly ICE personnel, whom he praised as strong individuals facing tough situations.
In the political arena, Representative Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) announced her intention to introduce impeachment articles against Noem, criticizing her management of ICE and claiming it has resulted in unnecessary violence and separation of families.
“Enough is enough,” Kelly declared. “She turned ICE into a rogue force that violated the Constitution. From Chicago to Minneapolis, her recklessness has taken lives.”
Additionally, Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has voiced her support for efforts to remove Noem from her position following incidents involving her.
