There are growing concerns that Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie, may have been kidnapped and taken to Mexico. This claim was stated by a former FBI agent, and further evidence hints that her disappearance could have been a targeted abduction.

As the search for Nancy enters its fifth day in Tucson, Arizona, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office has yet to identify any suspects.

One of the primary leads appears to be a memo sent to TMZ and two local TV stations, which included specific details about the case and a demand for a ransom in Bitcoin amounting to millions.

“This situation definitely feels deliberate,” noted Tracy Walder, a former special agent who led the FBI’s Los Angeles field office. She pointed out that Nancy’s home is set back on almost an acre of land, not in a crowded area, making it a prime spot for someone looking for easy targets.

Walder elaborated, “I don’t think this is just a failed robbery. With a robbery, you’d usually want to avoid any complications for the person you’re taking.” She speculated that the kidnapper might have observed Nancy’s routine, gathering information on her movements, especially during events like Sunday dinners when she was more vulnerable.

Law enforcement has so far concentrated their search efforts close to Nancy’s residence in the low-crime area of Catalina Foothills. However, Walder suspects that there may be ongoing operations on a broader scale.

“It’s likely the search area will widen, particularly near the border,” Walder stated. With Tucson being just about an hour’s drive from the border and time being of the essence, she pointed out the urgency in tracking down leads quickly.

Michael Harrigan, also a former FBI agent, highlighted that investigators were seen at the home with a Celebrite briefcase, which is used for digital forensics—an essential part of modern investigations.

According to Harrigan, cell phone data could be pivotal; phones that were nearby would leave signals that could aid in tracing movements. “This data is vital for law enforcement; they rely on it to track potential suspects,” he explained.

Police Officer Shot

Local authorities created speculation when they initially left Nancy’s home but returned later for further examination. Walder expressed frustration, commenting that the situation’s seriousness warranted a more thorough preservation of the crime scene.

She mentioned, “This should have been taken seriously, given the potential for a kidnapping. We still don’t know if Nancy is alive or if there’s a suspect.”

Harrigan indicated he suspects police have more information than they are disclosing. Returning to the scene typically suggests they uncovered something significant that was previously overlooked.

“In such cases, police usually don’t request to revisit unless they have new evidence,” he noted, suggesting law enforcement might have a good understanding of the investigation’s direction but prioritizes saving lives over immediate arrests.

Living Proof

On Wednesday, Savannah and her siblings released a video appealing to the kidnappers, asking for proof that Nancy is still alive.

Authorities mentioned that there has been no further contact with those behind the ransom note as of Thursday. “Our main goal is to confirm the victim’s well-being and create a channel for dialogue with the kidnappers,” Harrigan explained.

If the ransom note holds validity, establishing communication could be crucial. “It’s essential to know she’s alive and in good condition,” he stressed. This communication could also shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the abduction.
