Tim Hasselbeck’s Take on Shedeur Sanders’ Future

Tim Hasselbeck recently shared his thoughts on Shedeur Sanders after the quarterback’s first season in the NFL. During an appearance on ESPN’s “Get Up,” Hasselbeck expressed skepticism regarding the Cleveland Browns’ commitment to Sanders, indicating that he doubts Sanders will even secure the second-string position.

“No, they won’t,” Hasselbeck stated bluntly. “That’s just the reality of the situation. He’ll be on the roster likely due to his rookie contract or at least as part of the training camp lineup. He’s been a rookie for a while now, similar to Dillon Gabriel. I believe the Browns will bring in a more experienced player to compete for the starting role. With the way Shedeur is currently valued and his entry into the league, they might be hesitant to give him too much responsibility too soon.”

He continued, “Honestly, I don’t expect him to enter training camp as the number two on the depth chart. It’s tough being a head coach in the NFL. If you’re aiming to win, you need a solid quarterback, and I just don’t think Todd Monken will take that chance with someone like Shedeur.”

Hasselbeck didn’t stop there; he posited that Sanders might struggle to find a starting role in the league. “He really has to excel at the quarterback position to succeed in the NFL,” he noted. “And while that’s a positive challenge, the downside is that he may have some physical limitations that could hinder his progress. I’m not sure if he can overcome those.”

However, he mentioned that Sanders could potentially forge a career as a backup, giving him a shot at a starting spot down the line.

“Currently, I doubt any of the 32 teams are looking at him and thinking, ‘I want to build my team around this player,'” Hasselbeck remarked. “I don’t mean to sound harsh; it’s just the honest assessment of his standing as a player within the league.”

In his rookie season, Sanders played in eight games, starting seven, and threw for 1,400 yards along with seven touchdowns.

On a different note, Monken recently spoke about his optimism for working with Sanders, emphasizing that the quarterback situation remains uncertain. “Am I excited about Shedeur? Yes, I’m enthusiastic about all the quarterbacks in the room and can’t wait to get this team going,” he commented.
