Recently disclosed footage from the Epstein file release provides a fascinating, though somewhat grim, snapshot of Ghislaine Maxwell’s daily existence following her transition from a glamorous lifestyle to life in a Brooklyn jail.
Included among the 3 million files shared last week are clips that reveal the bleak routine of Maxwell, who is infamously linked to child grooming, while at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center.
One particular video, taken by security cameras shortly before 2 p.m. on July 1, 2020, portrays Maxwell, age 63, washing something in a sink close to her cot. She then shuffled back to her unkempt bed, attempting to straighten it out while folding a spare orange jumpsuit.
After appearing to be satisfied with her half-made bed, she lay down on her back and began to read a well-worn book, as seen in the footage.
Maxwell, who was educated at Oxford, had previously enjoyed nearly unrestricted access to Jeffrey Epstein’s lavish Florida estate, his private island, his jet, and even a luxury getaway in New Hampshire—until she was sentenced to 20 years for her involvement in a long-term sexual abuse ring.
At the Brooklyn facility, Maxwell received the same basic accommodations as other inmates. Among them were notable prisoners like Luigi Mangione and the former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Her living conditions consisted of a standard orange jumpsuit, a thin mattress, approved religious items, and books, but no personal belongings.
In August, Maxwell was moved to Camp Bryan in Texas, a minimum-security prison dubbed “Club Fed.” This transfer occurred after a nine-hour meeting with President Trump’s Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, during which they discussed her past with Epstein.
One convicted sex trafficker remarked on his new prison environment, highlighting that there were no “possums falling from the ceiling.”
In a correspondence with family, Maxwell expressed, “I feel like I’ve stepped into Alice’s Wonderland. It looks like glass,” according to a report from NBC News.
The files also contained a mugshot of Maxwell from July 2020 and a brief email exchange with Melania Trump.
Ultimately, Maxwell was found guilty of several serious offenses, including conspiracy to entice minors to engage in illicit sex acts and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors.
