LSU football coach Lane Kiffin criticizes CFP schedule

College Football Playoff Announces Schedule Changes

The College Football Playoff (CFP) will stick with its 12-team format through 2026, but the tournament committee has unveiled the postseason dates and bowl locations for the next couple of years. There’s been some buzz around the revised schedule for the quarterfinals and semifinals, which includes pushing the championship game to January.

This decision has drawn criticisms, notably from LSU’s new head coach, Lane Kiffin. He voiced concerns regarding the extended gap between games, saying, “Somehow, on purpose, the calendar got even worse…Kids play until January 25th and there’s almost a month between games?!?!”

The upcoming postseason for the 2026 season will see quarterfinals on December 30 at the Fiesta Bowl and January 1 at the Cotton Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Rose Bowl. The semifinals are scheduled for January 14 at the Orange Bowl and January 15 at the Sugar Bowl, with the championship set for January 25 in Las Vegas.

Looking ahead to 2027, the quarterfinals will take place at the Sugar Bowl on December 31, with the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Rose Bowl on January 1. The semifinals will happen on January 13 at the Orange Bowl and January 14 at the Cotton Bowl, while the championship game will be held on January 24 at the Superdome in New Orleans.

CFP Executive Director Rich Clark defended the schedule changes, claiming they aim to foster competitive balance, enhance the fan experience, and ensure consistency throughout the playoffs. “These dates allow us to maintain competitive balance and provide a better experience for everyone involved,” Clark remarked.

Kiffin’s apprehensions about the timing reflect a broader discussion on the impacts of sufficient rest for student-athletes and logistical pressures. The CFP format made its debut back in 2014, and, I think, it’s certainly evolved, but the debate over scheduling just seems to continue.

Coordination with bowl partners and their communities has reportedly played a significant role in adapting to the expanded playoff structure, making it beneficial for players, fans, and the sport overall.
