Toyota Motor Corporation Announces CEO Transition

Koji Sato, the CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation, is stepping down after three years. Kenta Kon, the current Chief Financial Officer, will take over his role.

In this reshuffling, Sato will transition to a position as vice chairman and industry chief executive. This move comes as the company faces scrutiny regarding its planned acquisition of a subsidiary, which certain minority investors have criticized for being undervalued and lacking clarity.

Many were surprised by this change in management.

Toyota revealed the leadership switch alongside their third-quarter financial results, revising their full-year profit forecast upward by about 12%, thanks to a weaker yen and cost-saving measures.

A press conference featuring Mr. Sato is scheduled for Friday at 3:30 p.m.

The company indicated that Kon will focus on internal management going forward, while Sato will direct attention to broader industry issues.

Changes like these aim to speed up decision-making in response to the significant upheaval currently affecting the automotive sector.

“It feels like there’s some sort of shift happening at Toyota,” pointed out James Hong, head of mobility research at Macquarie. Historically, product development has been essential to Toyota, but he noted that more decisions need to be made regarding non-automotive businesses in the future.

Sato took the reins from Akio Toyoda, the founder’s grandson, in April 2023, during a time when the company faced pressure for its slow adoption of battery electric vehicles.

Interestingly, Toyota’s commitment to gasoline-electric hybrids has paid off, supporting record sales, including last year, when they maintained the title of the world’s top seller.

Nevertheless, Toyota has seen some of its market share dwindle to agile competitors like BYD, particularly in Southeast Asia. The company has also faced criticism related to its governance concerning the acquisition of Toyota Industries Corporation.

Kenta Kon is thought to be the key strategist behind the acquisition, according to Hong.

“I believe Kon has more experience with financial matters than Sato, who primarily focused on product development,” he remarked.
