19-Year-Old Charged for Kidnapping Sisters He Met Online
Law enforcement in Florida apprehended a 19-year-old man accused of driving approximately 1,500 miles to abduct two young sisters he encountered on the gaming platform Roblox and subsequently communicated with via Snapchat.
The siblings, aged 12 and 14, were reported missing from their home in Indiantown on Saturday, prompting a swift response from both local and federal law enforcement agencies.
The day following their disappearance, a trooper from the Georgia Highway Patrol discovered the sisters, who had managed to escape the vehicle they believed they were being transported in.
According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, the suspect, identified as Hesel Mu Lah Sai, drove straight from Nebraska for 22 hours on Friday.
Budensiek remarked, “We’re talking about an adult male who came from another state and picked up two girls he had never met in person. The situation was quite alarming.” Thanks to security footage, authorities identified Sai’s vehicle and subsequently located a video still of him inside a convenience store.
As of now, Sai has been charged with two counts of kidnapping and three counts of obstructing a child’s custody; further charges may be pending.
The sheriff noted that the girls were “rescued” from a dangerous situation they found themselves in.
Roblox, a widely popular game among children, has faced criticism for insufficient measures to safeguard younger users against potential predators. The company has since addressed the incident, stating that they are looking into the matter and will cooperate fully with law enforcement.
In their response, Roblox emphasized their ongoing commitment to user safety, mentioning that they have implemented a variety of safety protocols, including chat filters to block personal information and restrict image sharing, alongside global age checks to limit interactions between users of different age groups.
“No application is entirely safe online,” Budensiek cautioned parents, urging them to keep a watchful eye on their children’s online activities. “If your child can communicate quietly from their room, it can lead to serious problems.”
