Sonny Jurgensen Passes Away at 91

Hall of Fame quarterback Sonny Jurgensen has died, as confirmed by his family through a statement from the Washington Commanders on Friday. He was 91 years old.

The cause of Jurgensen’s death has not been publicly disclosed. He played 11 seasons with the Washington Redskins and seven seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

His family expressed their sorrow, stating, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sonny Jurgensen, our husband, father, and grandfather.”

They reflected on his incredible life, pointing out not just his exceptional talent on the field but also his genuine spirit. “He lived with a deep sense of gratitude for the teammates, colleagues, and friends he met along the way. Although he took his last photograph, his legacy will remain an indelible part of the city he loved and the family he built.”

Beginning his NFL career with the Eagles, Jurgensen quickly became a standout player, leading the league in passing yards in both 1961 and 1962. In 1961, he passed for 3,723 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions, which were the highest totals in the NFL that year. His 26 interceptions in 1962 also stand as a record for the Eagles.

While with the Redskins, Jurgensen made four of his five career Pro Bowl appearances, topping the league in passing for three seasons. His impressive performance continued in 1967 when he achieved 31 touchdown passes, the most in the NFL at that time.

After retiring from play, he spent nearly four decades as an analyst in the team’s broadcast booth before retiring in August 2018.

Josh Harris, managing partner of the Commanders, praised Jurgensen, calling him “one of the defining legends of Washington football.” He also noted Jurgensen’s deep connection to the franchise and its fans, emphasizing his tough and dedicated nature.

Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983, Jurgensen is also a celebrated member of both the Commanders and Eagles Halls of Fame. He ranks in the top 40 of NFL history for career passing touchdowns and interceptions.

In their statement, his family concluded, “We take comfort in knowing he brought joy to so many people. This weekend, as we enjoy the game he loved, we will raise a glass together, share stories and smiles, and celebrate the extraordinary life of the greatest man of all time.”
