Pro-Israel Lobby’s Unexpected Support for Progressive Candidate
In an intriguing turn of events, the most influential pro-Israel lobby may have unintentionally backed a rising progressive figure. Analilia Mejia, who has been vocal about her views on the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza, is finding herself in the spotlight during the New Jersey Democratic primary.
This primary features a competitive showdown between former Congressman Tom Malinowski and Mejia, who has garnered endorsements from notable Democratic leaders like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has issued sharp criticism regarding this race, particularly as they seek to replace Mikie Sherrill, who recently became governor of New Jersey.
“AIPAC has historically succeeded by removing anti-Zionist Democrats,” a notable observation in this context.
Malinowski’s critique of U.S. aid to Israel has triggered a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign against Democratic candidates, funded by AIPAC. This campaign appears aimed at strengthening support for pro-Israel Democrats, specifically New Jersey’s Lt. Governor Tahesha Way.
Interestingly, AIPAC may have misjudged Mejia’s impact, as recent polls suggest she is leading the race, albeit by a slim margin of less than 1%. The once heavily Republican 11th Congressional District in New Jersey turned solidly blue when Sherrill defeated Republican Jay Weber in 2018. This dramatic shift suggests that Mejia’s potential victory could solidify her place in the House.
The competition remains tightly contested, and one can’t help but wonder how these unexpected alliances will influence the outcome in a district that has transformed dramatically in recent elections.
