Maryland Governor Criticizes DHS Over Facility Purchase
Maryland’s Governor Wes Moore, a Democrat seeking re-election, expressed concerns on Friday about the Department of Homeland Security’s recent acquisition of a warehouse in Williamsport. This location is stirring up anger among state Democrats, particularly with reports suggesting it could become a holding facility for undocumented immigrants. It’s worth noting that Maryland has been central to the Trump administration’s mass deportation initiatives, with connections to cases like Kilmer Abrego Garcia’s.
Moore referred to the situation as a “federal occupation,” emphasizing that the property, intended for commercial use, should not be repurposed in this way. He argued that converting the area would significantly harm economic prospects for Washington County and the broader state.
The warehouse’s location, near major highways, is crucial to the region’s manufacturing and logistics sectors. Moore highlighted that this sector employs about 4,000 people locally. He mentioned that Maryland’s Attorney General, Anthony Brown, plans to examine the legality of the acquisition to ensure it complies with state and federal laws.
“I have serious concerns about detention facilities that do not uphold basic human necessities and dignity,” Moore stated.
He further instructed state officials to assess measures to safeguard infrastructure, public health, safety, and long-term economic stability, including a review of local needs and emergency services. Moore also pointed out Maryland’s historical collaboration with the federal government, housing important agencies and military facilities. He expressed a desire for constructive dialogue with the Trump administration on issues like economic opportunity and infrastructure.
Additionally, Governor Moore criticized Secretary Noem for withholding FEMA funds meant for communities in the Maryland Panhandle that were impacted by flooding in 2025. Former Republican state Representative Neil Parrott countered by saying the Democrats’ stance on immigration had squandered a chance to secure federal support for his region.
Total Wine billionaire David Tron, who is campaigning in the area surrounding the planned detention site, criticized DHS, suggesting it represents a broader issue within U.S. immigration enforcement. “We definitely don’t need another ICE prison here or anywhere else in America,” he remarked.
On the West Virginia side, Attorney General J.B. McCaskey labeled the backlash against the ICE facility as indicative of Democrats’ longstanding inaction on immigration laws. In Mississippi, Senator Roger Wicker recently echoed some of Moore’s worries, having discussed similar plans for an ICE facility near the Tennessee border with Secretary Noem. He expressed gratitude for her willingness to reconsider the location, aligning with sentiments of local officials regarding economic development.
As discussions continue, Fox News Digital reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for further comment.
