Trump Launches Prescription Drug Discount Website
Former President Donald Trump has announced the launch of TrumpRx.gov, a new platform aimed at providing significant discounts on prescription medications to American consumers. He described this initiative as “one of the most transformative health care initiatives of all time.”
The site debuted on Thursday, showcasing 43 different prescription drugs with various discounts. These medications address a range of health issues, including conditions like asthma, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, HIV, infertility, menopause symptoms, nicotine addiction, and obesity, among others.
For instance, one popular weight-loss medication, Ozempic, is available on the platform for as little as $199, a steep drop from its wholesale price of $1,027.51—nearly 81% off. Similarly, another obesity treatment, the Wegovy pill, is listed for as low as $149, compared to its original cost of $1,349.02, representing an 89% discount.
The White House stated, “Millions of Americans struggling with infertility often pay for fertility treatments entirely out-of-pocket. Thanks to TrumpRx.gov, they stand to save an average of $2,000+ per cycle on common medications.”
The prices listed on the website reflect what customers would pay out-of-pocket.
TrumpRx is part of the “Most Favored Nation” drug pricing initiative, which is supported by an executive order signed in May. Trump aims to provide lower drug prices for Americans, negotiating directly with pharmaceutical companies to align U.S. prices more closely with those in other countries.
In the executive order, Trump stated, “The inflated prices in the United States fuel global innovation while foreign health systems get a free ride. This abuse of Americans’ generosity … must end. Americans will no longer be forced to pay almost three times more for the exact same medicines.”
While medications cannot be purchased directly from the site, customers will receive coupons they can print or download to apply at their pharmacies.
Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb and now the Chief Design Officer of the Trump administration, joined Trump to unveil the site. He explained, “I take this coupon and bring it to the pharmacy… I show it to the pharmacist, and I get the coupon credit right at the register.”
The website provides detailed information on each medication, including uses, risks, ingredients, and side effects. Users must confirm they’re U.S. residents and not participants in government insurance programs like Medicare.
Though private insurance holders can access the site, its primary aim is to help “the millions who face high out-of-pocket costs for medications not fully covered by insurance,” as noted by the White House.
Carl Schmid, executive director of the HIV+Hepatitis Policy Institute, remarked, “President Trump should be congratulated for shaking up the drug pricing system by taking the bold step to launch TrumpRx.”
This website is also part of Trump’s broader “Great Healthcare Plan,” which he urged Congress to pass quickly.
According to the TrumpRx website, “This comprehensive reform would codify the savings from the Most-Favored-Nation initiative, lower insurance premiums, hold big insurance companies accountable, maximize price transparency, and enable coverage of TrumpRx.gov purchases under health plans.”
