Calls for Prime Minister to Dismiss Chief of Staff Amid Censorship Claims

Labor Party rebels are urging the British Prime Minister to remove his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, who has been dubbed “the most powerful non-elected official in British politics.” A recent report has brought to light a troubling trend of censorship aimed at journalists, which has intensified these calls.

McSweeney, an essential part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s inner circle, faces fresh allegations linking him to efforts aimed at discrediting journalists. These claims emerged shortly after a 2023 news article exposed fraudulent political funding practices. This revelation adds pressure from dissenting factions within the Labor Party, demanding Starmer consider McSweeney’s dismissal, especially given his involvement in appointing Peter Mandelson, a controversial figure with connections to the disgraced Jeffrey Epstein, as the British ambassador to the US.

These accusations come on the heels of prior revelations about McSweeney’s role in founding the Labor Together Cutout, a campaign group allegedly aimed at suppressing news organizations that pose a threat to the party’s agenda. Among the targeted entities were campaigns like Sleeping Giants, which sought to undermine Breitbart News.

Investigations by a group named Democracy for Sale, along with reports from other sources, have suggested that Labor Together engaged in dubious practices, including funding to monitor journalists. They reportedly invested at least £30,000 in a public relations firm tasked with investigating those scrutinizing how undisclosed funds fueled Starmer’s leadership campaign. The report claims that McSweeney failed to disclose £730,000 in donations to his think tank during the 2017-2020 period, funds that were crucial for Starmer’s ascent.

The core accusation suggests McSweeney intentionally obscured the identities of Labor Together’s donors, presenting the think tank as a grassroots initiative while it was, in reality, a well-resourced entity aimed at taking control of the party.

John Cruddas, a former prominent Labor politician, reacted to these “shocking” allegations, expressing disbelief at the extent of the tactics allegedly used to undermine journalists: “I’ve heard previously about black press conferences, but nothing like this… it’s quite alarming.”

The report outlines that this extensive operation to gather information on journalists occurred after McSweeney exited Labor Together, leaving leadership to Josh Symonds, now a governmental minister under Starmer’s administration. Despite stepping back, McSweeney claims he was still informed about these activities, contradicting assertions of a clean break.

According to Democracy for Sale, a £30,000 memo prepared by a London consultancy sought to “discredit” journalists who exposed McSweeney’s alleged censorship efforts, particularly against dissenting media, while aiming to find leverage against them as well.

The timing of these claims is striking, as voices within the Labor Party, the primary opposition that could effectively challenge Starmer’s government outside of scheduled elections, have intensified calls for McSweeney’s ousting to preserve Starmer’s leadership credibility. Although Starmer chose the contentious Mandelson for the ambassador role, McSweeney was reportedly instrumental in this decision.

Labor insiders have been vocal in their demands for Starmer to part ways with McSweeney, with Labor MP Karl Turner stating, “The Prime Minister faces a decision—he will encounter challenges if he does not act against McSweeney, who has bullied and pressured his colleagues for too long.”

Turner further emphasized, “Fire him now. There shouldn’t be any hesitation.”

Another Labor MP, John Tickett, added, “We don’t need to overhaul No 10 entirely; the government simply needs a new direction.” Turner reiterated this sentiment, warning that if Starmer surrounds himself with advisers like McSweeney, he may soon face a choice about his own future as well. “Keeping McSweeney in Downing Street could lead to unnecessary conflicts,” he noted.

Despite ongoing criticism, it highlights a significant shift, as some members of Congress are now openly voicing their concerns without anonymity, indicating growing unrest within the party.
