Gondola Malfunction Strands Skiers at Gore Mountain
Recently, over 50 winter sports enthusiasts faced an unexpected situation at a New York ski resort.
A mechanical failure of a gondola at Gore Mountain in North Creek left nearly 70 skiers suspended in the air for hours on Wednesday morning. Officials from the Olympic Regional Development Authority stated that the gondola halted due to a mechanical alignment issue, which triggered a safety sensor that caused the automatic shutdown of the lift.
Mountain operations and ski patrol teams promptly assisted the stranded skiers, initiating a standard evacuation process. At the time, around 67 passengers were aboard about 20 gondola cabins.
Fortunately, everyone was rescued safely, without any injuries reported. The request for assistance came shortly after 9 a.m., and by around 2 p.m., the evacuation was complete, resulting in nearly five hours of delay, according to a statement from the New York State Department of Environmental Protection.
The following morning, Gore Mountain announced that the gondola had resumed normal operations.
“We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our guests,” the resort expressed in their statement, also commending the efforts of their crew. The Northwoods Gondola has been repaired, and all safety inspections were completed before returning to service.
Interestingly, some forest rangers involved in the response had completed gondola evacuation training just last fall, which likely helped in managing the rescue effectively.
The Olympic Regional Development Authority reassured the public, stating, “Safety remains our top priority and our teams are well trained and experienced to deal with situations like this.”
Reactions to the incident were lively on social media, with many users sharing their thoughts. One user mentioned they would be cautious about using gondolas again but still planned to ski at Gore Mountain. Others recalled similar experiences with ski lifts, noting that gondola cabins tend to feel more secure than open chairlifts in unusual circumstances.
One memorable comment highlighted how, “If it had been a lift, it would have been very cold.”
Gore Mountain is known as one of the premier ski destinations in the Adirondacks, featuring a variety of trails and breathtaking views. The resort offers a mix of downhill skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities, catering to both families and competitive skiers alike. Plus, it boasts an exceptional gondola ride with scenic vistas of the snowy landscape.
