USA skiers are facing criticism for their 'mixed feelings' about representing the country.

As the Trump administration intensifies its immigration policies, American freestyle ski athletes are facing significant criticism on social media following their comments about competing for Team USA at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

In interviews before Friday’s opening ceremony, various members of Team USA’s freestyle skiing squad discussed the implications of representing the U.S., particularly as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues its operations during President Trump’s second term.

Two-time Olympian and Olympic gold medalist Chris Lillis expressed his love for America, stating he could “never” envision representing another nation at the Olympics, yet admitted feeling “heartbroken” about current governmental actions. He voiced a desire for the country to prioritize respect for everyone’s rights, noting the importance of treating all individuals with love, not just citizens. Lillis hopes that athletes at the Olympics can embody the better aspects of America that they aim to represent.

First-time Olympian Hunter Hess shared a more conflicted view, admitting to having “mixed feelings” about representing the U.S. He noted the difficulties of the current situation and how much he doesn’t appreciate many aspects of it. Yet, he emphasized that his participation is more about honoring friends and family who support him and a reflection of what he believes is good about the United States, rather than a blanket endorsement of everything happening politically.

The athletes’ remarks have spurred backlash among Team USA supporters online. Some expressed their dissatisfaction, with comments like, “If you don’t take pride in representing the red, white, and blue, please stay home,” while others suggested that Lillis and Hess should be sent home for what they perceive as disrespect to the country.

In the upcoming Olympics, Hess is set to compete in the men’s freeski halfpipe, while Lillis will participate in the men’s aerials.
