UNC Triumphs Over Duke in Dramatic Finish

Chapel Hill was buzzing on a Saturday night, even a bit too much for some, perhaps. The 14th-ranked Tar Heels pulled off a thrilling 3-pointer in the last minute, which many thought sealed a dramatic win against the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils. Cheers erupted as fans began to flood the court, the blaring horns echoing the moment. Seth Trimble even mimicked Stephen Curry’s “Go Sleep” gesture after making the basket. Quite the scene, really.

But hold on—officials reviewed the play and decided to rewind the clock by 0.4 seconds. So, hundreds of fans had to be guided off the court, and, well, it was a bit of a mess; food and drinks were spilled all over. Thankfully for the home crowd, the earlier jubilation didn’t jinx the outcome. Duke struggled with an inbounds pass, allowing North Carolina to clinch the match 71-68.

This marks UNC’s most significant comeback against Duke since 2001, overcoming a 13-point deficit. They went on a notable 9-0 run in the final 2:25, but the lead came only at the last second, which is something, isn’t it?

After the second wave of jubilant fans storming the court, “Jump Around” by House of Pain blared through the speakers, and the excitement was palpable.

However, UNC will face a fine of at least $50,000 for breaching the ACC’s court storming regulations—a hefty price for such a lively celebration. They’d be doubling that if this happens again, considering fans rushed the court twice!

The win for UNC ended a streak where Duke had bested them in their previous three encounters, including the last year’s ACC tournament. While this was only Duke’s second loss this season, it brought North Carolina’s record to 19-4, which is, well, quite a turnaround for the team.

The next face-off is set for March 7th at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Should be interesting to see how it plays out!
