The first medals for figure skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics are set to be awarded today following the team competition.
This third day of competition will feature the last three rounds: pairs, men’s, and women’s free skates. By the end of the day, the team with the highest overall score—determined through placements—will secure a gold medal, while silver and bronze will go to the teams in second and third place, respectively.
The USA team aims to defend its gold from the 2022 team event and currently holds a solid lead as they enter this final day. A strong performance from ice dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates, coupled with a second-place finish by “Quad God” Ilya Marinin, has placed the U.S. at 44 points, ahead of Japan, which stands at 39 points.

How to watch the Olympic figure skating team competition for free
If you don’t have cable, trying out a live TV streaming service is a great option. Personally, I find DIRECTV convenient for watching live TV without charge for the first five days, and it includes the USA Network among other channels you might need for the Olympics.
If you’re a subscriber, you can catch every moment of the games through services like Peacock, starting at $10.99 monthly.

How the figure skating team competition works
This team event, introduced in 2014, is the latest addition to Olympic figure skating. It mirrors the gymnastics team events from the Summer Olympics, bringing together all four disciplines—men’s singles, women’s singles, pairs, and ice dance—into a single medal opportunity.
This year, 10 countries earned spots in the competition, including the U.S. and Japan, the gold and silver medalists from the last Olympics.
Teams are evaluated based on placement rather than the individual scores of skaters or pairs. The top scorer in each category contributes points towards their nation’s overall total. The five lowest-scoring teams get eliminated after the first round.
, After that, the top five teams compete in a free dance and free skate, with similar judging criteria as before. Ultimately, medals will be awarded based on the final rankings.
