Vandalism Disrupts Italy’s Railways During Olympic Opening
Authorities suspect far-left anarchists may be behind a series of calculated sabotage efforts targeting Italy’s railway infrastructure coinciding with the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
This past Sunday, the Bologna public prosecutor’s office, in collaboration with the anti-terrorist police unit DIGOS, initiated an investigation into extensive damage reported on railway tracks in Bologna and Pesaro, which has led to major train disruptions throughout the country.
As noted in a report from Corriere della Sera, investigators now lean towards the theory that anarchists orchestrated the attacks. Presently, there are no known arrests or suspects linked to the incidents.
Officials shared that they are exploring all possibilities, including the potential for a terrorist motive behind the actions.
According to RAI, a rudimentary incendiary device was utilized to ignite cables along the Bologna-Venice line near Castelmaggiore station. Interestingly, a similar device, which failed to ignite, was discovered by forensic teams on the Ancona route.
Additionally, an electric cabin controlling the switch on the Ancona-Rimini line was set ablaze, prompting a response from local fire services.
The seemingly interconnected nature of these attacks hints at a singular group orchestrating the sabotage.
Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini remarked, “If it’s confirmed that disruption of high-speed trains on the first day of the Olympics was planned, it shows someone is attempting to undermine Italy.”
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has expressed intentions to seek financial recompense from those responsible, emphasizing that a terrorism investigation is underway. They plan to file a sizable claim for damages once the culprits are identified, as many passengers faced significant delays and frustrations.
“We are committed to taking firm measures to prevent such serious actions that cause widespread inconvenience to millions of Italians,” the ministry stated.
The nature of this attack draws parallels to previous arson incidents targeting France’s high-speed rail lines ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics.
During that time, France’s interior minister attributed similar sabotage efforts to “extreme left” groups. Still, those behind the attacks remain at large.
This incident in Italy coincided with a significant protest by leftist groups in Milan on Saturday, where some radical climate activists criticized the Olympics as being environmentally unsustainable.
