Kelce’s Future with the Chiefs in Question
The Kansas City Chiefs are eager to keep Travis Kelce around for a while longer.
Rumors about the tight end’s potential retirement have been circulating, but the latest reports suggest he’s inclined to return. The Chiefs have expressed their desire for him to be back, according to NFL Network.
A conversation about a possible 14th season is set to happen following the Super Bowl in 2026.
Kelce hasn’t made any decisions yet, but he’s reportedly in touch with teams.
This isn’t the first time retirement chatter has surrounded Kelce during the offseason, though his situation feels different this time.
Last year, both Kelce and the Chiefs saw their hopes for a three-peat crushed by the Eagles.
At 36, he came back hoping to reclaim the championship.
Unfortunately, that didn’t pan out. The Chiefs had their most challenging season, finishing 6-11 and missing the playoffs for the second time in Kelce’s career.
Contributing to the challenges, quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending injury, which may impact his availability moving forward. Kelce also had an off year by his own standards, recording 851 receiving yards, a drop from 823 in 2024.
With all this uncertainty, especially regarding Mahomes, there are whispers that Kelce might consider retirement to focus on his upcoming wedding to Taylor Swift.
His two-year contract extension will end this season, and with the team facing salary cap issues, agreeing on a new contract will be essential for both parties.
These cap constraints could require tough decisions for a team coming off a disappointing season. The Chiefs have already replaced offensive coordinator Matt Nagy with Eric Bieniemy.
Kelce seems to be fully on board with this change.
“I can’t wait to get him back in the building,” Kelce mentioned on the “New Heights” podcast in January. “He’s one of my all-time favorite coaches and one of my all-time favorite people. I’ve had so many incredible growth moments under him, both as a player and as a person. I love this guy. It’ll be great to see him back wearing the Chiefs logo again.”
