Adrian Adams, who is running alongside New York Governor Kathy Hochul, previously voted in favor of allowing certain non-citizens to participate in New York City elections. This vote was part of a bill that aimed to permit legal permanent residents and those authorized to work to vote in local elections. However, the proposal was ultimately struck down by the Empire State Supreme Court.
Republican Representative Nicole Malliotakis criticized the initiative, arguing that those who undermine the voice of American citizens have no business holding office in the state.
Last week, Hochul announced Adams as her running mate, highlighting their shared background of growing up in union families and their commitment to serving New York.
Hochul, who became governor after Andrew Cuomo’s resignation in 2021, won the gubernatorial election in 2022 and is now seeking re-election.
On a related note, her primary challenger has nominated a democratic socialist as a deputy candidate, a move that could significantly influence the race.
Interestingly, Adams also ran in last year’s Democratic primary for mayor of New York City but was not successful.
