Florida Driving Tests to be Administered Only in English
Starting February 6, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will implement a significant change: driving tests will only be available in English. This was announced last month and means that knowledge tests for non-commercial driver licenses, which were previously available in multiple languages, will now only be offered in English.
The department clarified that previously, knowledge tests for Commercial Learner Permits and Commercial Driver Licenses were offered exclusively in English and Spanish. Now, with this updated policy, all driving license tests will be conducted in English only.
In a move to streamline the process, the FLHSMV has revamped the statewide driver’s license testing system. This means that translation services for knowledge and skill tests will no longer be permitted, and any printed tests in languages other than English will be discarded.
Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his support for this decision. He emphasized that it’s important for drivers to be able to read road signs and understand instructions in English. In a post on social media, he praised this reform as a necessary step towards enhancing public safety on the roads.
Similarly, Republican Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins, who recently ran for governor, also backed the decision. He acknowledged the importance of helping drivers understand road signs and safety commands, suggesting that this would ultimately benefit everyone on the road.
