Progressive Analilia Mejia poised for a surprising victory in New Jersey primary

Progressive Candidate Leads in New Jersey Congressional Primary

A progressive candidate, supported by notable left-wing figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is poised for a potential upset in the Democratic Congressional primary in New Jersey. As the final votes are counted, Analilia Mejia holds a slim lead against former Representative Tom Malinowski, with nearly 900 votes separating them out of over 63,000 votes cast.

Mejia and Malinowski are among 11 Democratic contenders vying for the seat left vacant by Mikie Sherrill, who resigned after winning the New Jersey gubernatorial election scheduled for November 2025.

This primary is drawing attention as a critical early indicator of the struggle between progressive and traditional Democratic factions.

Mejia’s Candidacy and Political Stance

A victory for Mejia would mark another win for the anti-establishment left, continuing a trend that began when Democratic Socialist and current New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani secured an unexpected primary win in June 2025. Mejia, who previously served as the national political director for Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, has been vocal about her vision for the party’s future.

She has emphasized the need for economic policies that support the working class. “We need to rebuild our party,” Mejia stated, expressing concerns about an economy skewed in favor of billionaires.

Key Issues in the Campaign

Regarding immigration, Mejia has been critical of the previous administration’s stringent policies and has called for the elimination of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). “I say abolish ICE now,” she declared, arguing that reforming the agency is not feasible.

Her comments came during a time when there was significant backlash against immigration enforcement tactics, particularly following tragic incidents involving federal agents in Minnesota.

Supreme Court Criticism

Mejia is also outspoken against the current Supreme Court’s rulings, claiming they favor right-wing interests over legal integrity. She has called for accountability measures against justices and suggests term limits for new Supreme Court justices.

Student Loan and Tax Policies

On education, Mejia promises to cancel all student loan debt and push for free community college and technical school. She stresses that anyone working full-time deserves a living wage, proposing a minimum salary floor of $40,000 and no federal taxes on that amount.

Foreign Policy Views

In contrast to Malinowski, Mejia holds a tougher stance on Israel. She’s openly acknowledged human rights concerns related to Israel’s actions against Palestinians, making her position clear at recent forums.

Losing ground in the fundraising race, Malinowski has faced significant attack ads from groups associated with AIPAC due to his previous stance on aid conditions to Israel.

As the candidate endorsements roll in, Mejia gained support from top progressives, including Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez, along with other influential leaders in the party.

Implications of the Primary

The outcome of this primary could send strong signals about the Democratic Party’s direction. With a focus on progressive ideals, Mejia’s campaign exemplifies a broader push for change within the party, one that many voters seem eager to accept. The winner will face Republican Joe Hathaway in the upcoming special election.

While this district has leaned Democratic, recent election trends give Republicans a glimmer of hope as they aim to challenge the Democratic majority, especially following a narrow victory by Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race.
