HHS to Introduce a National Website for Healthcare Price Transparency

Kennedy Pushes for Healthcare Price Transparency

As his first year as Health and Human Services Secretary approaches, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. aims to enhance healthcare price transparency for Americans.

During an event at the Heritage Foundation on Monday, he hinted at the launch of an interactive website designed to shed light on healthcare prices across the nation. Kennedy believes this initiative will foster price competition, ultimately lowering healthcare costs.

At the “One Year of Making America Healthy Again” event, Kennedy explained how the site will allow Americans to compare prices at various hospitals, medical facilities, and concierge services in their area, helping them decide where to receive care.

He shared an anecdote, stating that he himself used a demo site. In his example, he likened it to a pregnant woman in Manhattan weighing her options for childbirth. “Within a mile radius in Manhattan, there are around 30 hospitals, each with varying prices. The lowest was $1,300, while the highest reached $22,000,” he noted.

He mentioned that Joe Gebbia, the U.S. Chief Design Officer, along with talented designers from Silicon Valley, are behind the new website’s development.

“This gives consumers more choice, which I believe will help drive down healthcare expenses,” Kennedy remarked. He added that insurance companies will also be required to disclose reimbursement rates and provider fees for each procedure and illness, claiming this change could significantly reduce costs.

“These systemic changes, I think, will quickly make healthcare more affordable and transparent for all Americans,” he concluded.

Back in 2019, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that mandated disclosure of healthcare costs prior to treatment. The Trump administration continues to prioritize price transparency and affordability into its second term.

Kennedy pointed out that while Trump had enacted price transparency legislation, the Biden administration had largely overlooked enforcing it. He emphasized that new regulations will ensure hospitals comply, citing potentially heavy fines for noncompliance.

During his remarks, Kennedy reflected on his role in the current administration, expressing his previous struggles with censorship. “I prayed every day to be in a position to address these issues,” he shared.

In closing, Kennedy mentioned Trump’s vision of making every American the “CEO of their own health,” emphasizing that they should have the tools to make informed decisions.
