Serena Williams takes another step toward a possible return to tennis

Serena Williams Eligible for Competition Return

Serena Williams has been listed as eligible to return to competitive tennis, according to the International Tennis Integrity Agency, which announced her status on Monday. She’s been in the test pool for six months and can resume play as of February 22.

This development follows her re-registration as an anti-doping test subject last year. Many have speculated, perhaps a bit prematurely, that this might mean she’s poised for a comeback to the sport.

However, at that time, Williams firmly denied any intentions of returning.

Back in December, Williams tweeted humorously that, “Oh, I’m not going back. These wildfires are crazy,” suggesting a light-hearted dismissal of speculation.

Brendan McIntyre, a spokesperson for the U.S. Tennis Association, expressed enthusiasm about the possibility when he mentioned that both fans and the organization would wholeheartedly welcome her back if she decided to compete again.

In a recent interview, she seemed taken aback by questions about her return on the ‘Today’ show. She reacted with surprise, saying, “Really, you hear something like this on the ‘Today’ show? Oh my god.” Her playful banter continued when the host joked about her being in trouble if she didn’t answer.

Though Williams portrayed a carefree attitude, stating, “I’m just having fun and enjoying my life right now,” she also added a note of uncertainty by saying, “I don’t know, we’ll see what happens.” It hints at a bit of ambivalence regarding her future in tennis.

She attempted to set the record straight regarding her involvement in the drug testing protocol, replying, “Did you re-enter? I didn’t know if I was out or not. Listen, I can’t talk about this.” It’s almost as if she’s trying to deflect the myriad of questions circling around her potential return.

Since the 2022 U.S. Open, Williams hasn’t participated in any matches. In a candid essay published in Vogue in August 2022, she reflected on taking a break from tennis and mentioned her desire to possibly expand her family with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, who is the co-founder of Reddit. They welcomed their second daughter, Adira, in August 2023, joining their firstborn, Olympia, who is now eight.

Last August, she sparked conversations by revealing her role as a paid spokesperson for Ro, a company she’s been associated with due to her personal journey to maintain a healthy weight post-pregnancy, using a GLP-1 medication to achieve her fitness goals.

In her own words, Williams shared how effective this regimen was, stating, “I lost 34 pounds in one year using GLP-1.” It seems she’s enjoying this new chapter of her life, even if that chapter is still being written.
