Reagan's granddaughter and Kevin McCarthy celebrate Reagan's legacy on his 115th birthday

Memorial Service for Ronald Reagan’s 115th Birthday

Hundreds gathered at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Friday to honor what would have been the late president’s 115th birthday. This year’s memorial takes on special significance following the passing of his son, Michael Reagan, earlier this year.

Ashley Reagan, the president’s granddaughter, remarked that this annual event is crucial for preserving the legacy her father dedicated much of his life to maintaining. “Even with my grandfather’s recent passing, it was really important for our family to be here and celebrate his contributions,” she shared. “My grandfather’s legacy continues through both him and my father.”

The gathering in Simi Valley, California, included family members, political leaders, and dedicated supporters of the former president. Ashley reflected on her father, who succumbed to cancer on January 4 at the age of 80. She described him as a “great personality” who was always straightforward about his political views and was known for his honesty.

She added that her father’s talent for connecting with various people stemmed from observing her grandfather’s communication style. “It wasn’t about who they were; it was about the interaction,” she noted. This ability, she believes, greatly contributed to her grandfather’s success during his presidency.

Ashley portrayed Ronald Reagan not just as the national leader everyone saw but also as her affectionate “Grandpa.” “The public figure was the same person we experienced at home,” she explained, recounting family moments spent horseback riding and sharing meals together.

Discussing today’s political landscape, both Ashley and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy recognized parallels with the challenges Reagan faced when he took office in the 1980s. Ashley pointed out that the country is reflecting similar struggles, like high inflation and international tensions. “My grandfather would have called for unity in such divisive times,” she said, suggesting he would likely advocate for more bipartisan efforts.

McCarthy, who was the keynote speaker at the birthday commemoration, indicated that Reagan’s legacy continues to shape political ideologies. He described growing up in a Democrat household but feeling drawn to Reagan’s vision, which motivated his own political alignment. “Reagan and Lincoln inspired me to be a Republican,” he admitted.

McCarthy emphasized Reagan’s approach as a “happy conservative,” highlighting how he welcomed diverse voices into the party. He recalled how many were inspired to join the Republican movement simply because of Reagan’s charisma and leadership.

Ashley mentioned her ongoing commitment to her grandfather’s legacy through her work with the Young America Foundation, which manages the Reagan Ranch in Santa Barbara. “After my father’s passing, it feels crucial to stay connected to Ronald Reagan’s influence,” she expressed. She noted that young people continue to find inspiration in his messages about freedom, particularly as his birthday draws attention to his lasting impact.
