U.S. Speed Skating Team Faces Challenges at 2026 Winter Olympics
On Tuesday, the U.S. speed skating team encountered tricky conditions during their second event at the 2026 Winter Olympics held in Milan. It wasn’t exactly what they had hoped for.
The competition kicked off with the women’s 500m short track speed skating race. In the third heat, Corinne Stoddard was set to compete against Wang Xingran from China, Japan’s Rika Kanai, and Italy’s Ariana Sigel.
Stoddard had a strong start but things took a turn when she fell, unexpectedly taking out three of her competitors. I mean, that must have been a shock for her, right? Kanai surprisingly managed to get back up and finish behind Wang. Meanwhile, another American, Kristen Santos Griswold, secured first place in her heat, earning her spot in the finals.
In the Short Track Speed Skating Mixed Team Relay B final, another accident struck, this time involving Julie LeTai, who slipped and collided with the pads. Sadly, Team USA finished in fourth place overall for this event.
Italy emerged victorious, claiming the gold medal, while Canada took home silver, followed by Belgium with the bronze. It’s tough to see the U.S. struggling in these early competitions. Medals aren’t easy to come by at the Winter Olympics, and as of Tuesday, the U.S. had only secured two, both of which were gold.
It’s just the beginning, of course, but there’s a lot of pressure on these athletes. Hopefully, they can bounce back in the upcoming events.
