Democratic Texas Rep. Suggests Unity Among Ethnic Minorities

This week, a video featuring Democratic Texas Representative Gene Wu gained significant attention on social media. It struck many as a candid reveal of lawmakers’ perspectives.

In an episode of “Defining an American with Jose Antonio Vargas” aired on December 31, 2024, Wu, an immigrant from China, urged ethnic minorities to band together against what he described as common oppressors.

He stated, “Because we are now the majority in this country.” Wu elaborated on the dynamics between various racial groups, particularly focusing on Asians and Latinos.

“It’s not just Latinos. It’s not just Asians. It’s not just African-Americans. It’s everyone. Our country, and the forces at play, will continue to divide these groups. They have invested so much time and resources trying to avoid seeing each other as adversaries. Yet, they fail to recognize that all oppressors come from the same source,” Wu said, emphasizing that “Oppression comes from one place.”

Though Wu didn’t specify who these “oppressors” were, he hinted strongly at underlying societal issues. “The day we recognize that Latinos, African-Americans, Asians, and other communities face the same oppressor is the day we start to win. We have the capacity to shape this country for the better and ensure justice for all,” he remarked.

Elon Musk critiqued Wu’s comments with a sentiment that he should reflect on his statements more deeply. Meanwhile, Matt Walsh from The Daily Wire raised his concerns over perceived double standards in political rhetoric, especially highlighting the recent backlash against President Trump’s shared meme, compared to Wu’s remarks.

The video has since racked up almost 14 million views on X.
