Time for some pizza, right?
New York City is once again staking its claim as the Pizza Capital of the World, thanks to local chain Mama’s Too being named the best pizza by Time Out Magazine.
The magazine’s team of editors and writers tasted pies from various renowned pizzerias globally, sampling a range of styles from New York to Detroit and Neapolitan.
But one pizza stands out above the rest, and yes, it’s in New York City.
Time Out’s rankings validated the belief among New Yorkers that their city hosts the finest pizza. Mama’s Too in Manhattan has taken the top spot globally.
Specifically, their Cacio e Pepe slice snagged the highest honor. It includes whipped mascarpone, aged mozzarella, Pecorino Romano, and Parmigiano-Reggiano.
This restaurant operates in two locations: the West Village and the Upper West Side.
The extensive menu features enticing options like Angry Nonna pizza, which boasts hot soppressata, Calabrian chili oil, and hot honey, as well as Bufalini pizza topped with beer-battered chicken. There’s also a sweet option of poached pears with gorgonzola and hot honey. The Cacio e Pepe slice really caught the attention of Time Out’s food and beverage editor, Morgan Carter.
Carter recalled being “enticed by the piazza, which was literally hiding under a blizzard of Pecorino and Parmigiano-Reggiano shreds” as soon as she entered Mama’s Too.
She noted, “After a brief time in the oven, those flavors melded beautifully: creamy, light mascarpone, a hint of funk from the aged mozzarella, and the zesty, stretchy cheesiness I was craving.”
However, there’s a note of caution: “It contains freshly ground black pepper, so be careful if your teeth are a bit sensitive.”
Interestingly, Chicago’s Milly’s Pizza in the Pan is the only other U.S. pizzeria to make it into the top 18, representing the epitome of Chicago’s deep-dish traditions.
