Kentucky Judge Sentences Convicted Sex Offender

A judge in Kentucky has sentenced a convicted sex offender to 30 years in prison, significantly lighter than the jury’s recommendation of 65 years.

Christopher Thompson, 24, displayed no remorse during the sentencing, even using profanity in the courtroom. He told the prosecutor, “See you in 20 years.” Reports indicate he made mocking comments about the victim during the trial on February 2.

“I don’t feel sorry for anyone,” Thompson stated. “I have no sympathy for you, the victim, or the victim’s family. I don’t care. Boohoo.”

Thompson was convicted last December on charges including kidnapping, robbery, sodomy, and sexual abuse. In July 2023, he allegedly forced a woman into his car at gunpoint in south Louisville, drove her to an elementary school parking lot, and sexually assaulted her before making her withdraw cash from an ATM to facilitate his return for another assault.

Thompson has a history of juvenile offenses, including theft and robbery. He also has previous convictions for being a felon with a firearm and violating probation. While awaiting sentencing, he faces a new charge related to allegedly choking a correctional officer.

Judge Tracy Davis of the Jefferson County Circuit Court reduced the jury’s sentence by more than half, stating that Thompson “fell through the cracks” but should still have an opportunity for rehabilitation due to his brain not being fully developed. She added nearly four years to his sentence for his behavior in court. He will be eligible for parole after serving 20 years.

In response, Republican members of the Louisville Metro Council held a press conference criticizing the ruling. Minority Caucus Chairman Anthony Piagentini expressed concern about the apparent disregard for the victim’s trauma, questioning if she would simply “get over this in 30 years.”

According to reports, U.S. Attorney Gerina Wisless also expressed disappointment with the verdict.
