American Airlines Celebrates 100th Anniversary with Nostalgic Menu

American Airlines is gearing up for its 100th anniversary by revisiting its past, focusing on the popular retro food trends of today. Starting February 9, passengers can pre-order a special menu inspired by the Roaring Twenties, with offerings rolling out on select flights come March.

Alongside dishes like beef Wellington and shrimp cocktail, this menu shift seems to address ongoing traveler complaints about mediocre in-flight meals.

Reflecting on the airline’s golden days, a user on a Reddit aviation forum reminisced, “Back then, airlines like Pan Am provided spacious seating and fine dining experiences.” They also noted how the current focus on cost-cutting has resulted in less luxurious offerings.

This new menu may change traveler expectations. Appetizers will include items like shrimp cocktail, Waldorf salad, and deviled eggs topped with caviar, which is expected to be available by April. Additionally, Boursin cream cheese dip will make an appearance in domestic first class on select long-haul flights.

The main course will keep with the vintage theme, featuring beef Wellington accompanied by roasted vegetables and asparagus. A pecan tart is on the dessert list, providing a sweet finish to the meal.

American Airlines stated that this limited-time menu will launch on select international flights in both Flagship First and Flagship Business cabins, with plans to extend it to domestic First Class in April.

“Celebrating our 100th anniversary allows us to look back on our journey,” Rhonda Crawford, SVP of Customer Experience Design and Strategy at American Airlines, said. “These menus honor the flavors that characterized our early days, aiming to create memorable experiences for travelers today.”

One Reddit user shared a personal memory: “When I was six, I flew from Chicago to Florida for $500 a ticket—a hefty sum back then. I even wore my best ‘airplane clothes’ and remember enjoying steak on the flight.”

Reactions to the new menu were mixed, with some enthusiasts expressing doubt over the caviar and others calling for improved overall service.

The airline plans to continue celebrating its centennial throughout 2026 with various promotions and initiatives, promising more surprises for passengers in the coming year.
