New Political Spending by AI-Backed Groups

Major AI companies and innovators are starting to channel their resources into the political arena, particularly for this year’s midterm elections. A political group known as Leading the Future is pledging $500,000 for a significant advertising campaign to support Laurie Buckhout, a former Defense Department official. She is competing in next month’s Republican primary for North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District against incumbent Democratic Rep. Donald Davis.

This campaign mark represents Leading the Future’s first substantial expenditure and is backed by influential figures including Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and co-founder, and venture capitalist Ben Horowitz, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, which has invested in OpenAI.

Earlier this year, Leading the Future reported raising over $125 million in funding, with more than $70 million in cash reserves.

AI’s Political Engagement Begins

The group views this financial commitment to the North Carolina primary—where early voting starts next week—as merely the starting point. Co-strategists Zach Moffat and Joe Brust shared that they expect continuous involvement at both state and federal levels throughout the 2026 election cycle.

They emphasized the importance of supporting legislators who understand the urgent need for comprehensive regulatory frameworks for AI. Their aim is to ensure the U.S. remains a global leader in AI innovation while competing with China and protecting the public’s safety.

Looking ahead, Leading the Future plans to support additional candidates who advocate policies that embrace the economic advantages of AI while pushing back against initiatives that threaten American innovation.

In Illinois, the group intends to invest seven figures in open Democratic primaries, particularly backing former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. in the 2nd Congressional District, and former Rep. Melissa Bean in the 8th Congressional District.

Initial supporters of Leading the Future include Joe Lonsdale, a venture capitalist involved with various tech firms, and Ron Conway, a philanthropist and co-founder of SV Angel.
