New York City’s Anti-Semitism Czar Draws Controversy
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s recently appointed anti-Semitism czar has faced backlash for past comments. Phyllisa Wisdom, who leads the Mayor’s Office to Combat Anti-Semitism, once expressed her dismay over social media comments that blamed Hamas for launching rockets at Israeli civilians.
In 2021, she criticized then-mayoral candidate Andrew Yang for his post that stated, “New Yorkers always stand with our fellow Israelis as they stand and endure against terrorism.”
Impact of Anti-Semitism in NYC
Meanwhile, incidents of anti-Semitism in New York City have surged nearly threefold, contrasting sharply with a decrease in other types of crimes.
Wisdom, who identifies as a Jewish American and a New Yorker, responded to Yang’s tweet with shock, saying it reflects a stance that overlooks state-sponsored violence against Palestinians. She also notably mentioned her indifference towards Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish faith, in a 2009 post, indicating a more complex relationship with Jewish traditions.
Mamdani’s office has not issued a statement on these past remarks. Wisdom claims a “liberal Zionist” identity, advocating a two-state solution, and she previously led the New York Jewish Agenda, critical of Israeli military operations in Gaza.
In response to her new role, she emphasized her commitment to ensuring Jewish safety while also representing diverse Jewish perspectives in the administration, particularly amidst rising tension and fear.
Controversies Surrounding Wisdom’s Role
However, concerns about her suitability for the position have emerged. Yuval David, a fellow at the Middle East Forum, expressed worry about Wisdom potentially alienating the Orthodox Jewish community, emphasizing that Zionism is about Jewish identity and survival rather than mere politics.
Additionally, Rabbi Mark Schneier of the Foundation for Ethical Understanding remarked that Wisdom’s opposition to widely accepted definitions of anti-Semitism undermines her role. Mamdani, who has been openly critical of Israel, faces scrutiny regarding his choice to appoint someone with Wisdom’s track record.
Brooklyn Democratic state Representative Kalman Jaeger questioned the wisdom of appointing a leader for anti-Semitism initiatives under a mayor known for his criticisms of Israel. Despite the challenges, Mamdani defended Wisdom as a dedicated leader and expressed eagerness to work with her to ensure a safe environment for Jewish New Yorkers.
