Ilia Marin Shines in Men’s Figure Skating Short Program at Winter Olympics
During the men’s figure skating short program on Tuesday, Ilia Marin delivered a standout performance, placing him in contention for gold at the Winter Olympics.
Known as the “God of the Quad,” Marin showcased impressive skills on the ice. His routine took off when he expertly executed a quadruple flip on his initial jump, truly setting the stage for an exhilarating performance.
The 21-year-old from Virginia glided smoothly across the rink. He landed a triple axel, seamlessly transitioning into a changing camel spin. Then came a quadruple Lutz followed by a triple toe loop—his excitement was palpable as he pumped his fists after landing. It seemed he could hardly contain his joy, clearly feeling he had nailed the routine.
The crowd erupted as Marin landed a backflip, and he wrapped up the program with a series of spins. The energy in the arena heightened with each move.
Meanwhile, Americans Cory Dropkin and Cory Teece made history by securing America’s first Olympic medals in mixed doubles curling.
As Marin awaited his score, NBC broadcaster Johnny Weir remarked, “He’s the benchmark.” Finally, Marin received a score of 108.16, surpassing Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama, who scored 103.07, and France’s Adam Hsiao Him Fa, who tallied 102.55.
Marin had already claimed an Olympic gold earlier, helping the U.S. team win in the mixed team event last week with an impressive free skate score of 200.03 points, contributing 10 crucial points for the team’s victory.
Looking ahead, the men’s singles free skating event is set for Friday.
