Mamdani's 'Cruelty' of Abandoning NYC's Homeless in the Cold Provokes Anger

As New York City faces severe winter weather, Mayor Zoran Mandani’s (D) decision not to mandate that homeless individuals seek shelter has sparked criticism.

The number of fatalities due to the cold has reached 18, with some victims discovered outside, according to a recent report. It’s concerning, really.

Before taking office, Mandani had indicated he would not continue the previous administration’s policy of clearing homeless camps, as noted by a news outlet.

Brian Stettin, a senior adviser from the Adams administration, stated, “When people are in immediate danger, there is no debate. We should prioritize safety over any ideological divisions during a ‘Code Blue’ situation.”

The mayor’s office seems to be taking a stance that authorities can only intervene if someone poses a threat to themselves or to others. Interestingly, Baltimore’s Mayor Brandon Scott, whom Mandani has praised, recently instructed police to bring individuals indoors to shield them from the cold.

People are questioning the reasoning behind Mandani’s approach. Former City Comptroller Scott Stringer commented that Baltimore’s method is sensible given the circumstances, pointing out that the removal policy can be rather subjective and grants the mayor significant interpretive power.

“The real question is whether the inaction stems from ideology or incompetence,” Stringer remarked. “Saving lives should be our top priority. We need to ensure they can survive the night in such extreme conditions,” he added.

He further expressed confusion, stating, “Making the right choice seems straightforward when lives are at stake. Why is this complicated?”

Reactions on social media have been swift. One user mentioned, “Mamdani has revealed his true colors.” Another user pointedly remarked, “This is the New York City you voted for.”

Mamdani’s progressive views became clear during his inauguration, highlighted when he stated, “We replace the coldness of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.”

As per reports, Mandani took his oath on the Islamic Koran and has committed to leading as a democratic socialist.

While New Yorkers cope with frigid temperatures, forecasts suggest that conditions may improve as the week goes on.
