Another Shocking Episode of Hijack!
The latest installment of Apple TV’s thrilling series, Hijack, certainly didn’t disappoint. Season 2, Episode 5, titled “Outrage,” wrapped up with quite a bang, unearthing plenty of drama and returning faces from the first season. Co-creator Jim Field-Smith hinted at some “unfinished business” with Sam Nelson, portrayed by Idris Elba, which made it a particularly engaging episode.
Spoilers Ahead for Season 2, Episode 5!
Following the explosive revelations of Episode 4, where Jess (Karima McAdams) admitted to killing Freddy (Albrecht Schuch) and her involvement in the hijacking, this episode escalates the tension. Passengers confront Sam, questioning whether there are explosives on board. Meanwhile, on the ground, Daniel (Max Beesley) interrogates an unexpected person, Stuart Atterton (Neil Maskell).
The last time we saw Stuart in season 1, he was defeated by Sam on the plane and taken into custody. So, what brings him back in Season 2? In discussing Stuart’s role, Smith offers some intriguing behind-the-scenes insights. Let’s break down what happened in this episode and what Stuart’s reappearance means.
Recap: Stuart Returns
As chaos erupts below, Daniel tries to piece together the situation with inputs from John Bailey-Brown (Ian Barfield) and Sam, both of whom are well-versed in the KA29 hijacking. During the interrogation with Stuart, the tension is palpable as he responds with typical skepticism, “Who the hell are you?!”
Daniel suggests they need to be cooperative: “There’s something I can do if you stop fooling around and start helping.” Stuart, however, snaps back, “I’m in jail, Detective. I know, just like you, that everything’s going south.” As Daniel mentions the ongoing threat, Stuart stays tight-lipped, showing his reluctance to engage. Daniel pushes, hoping personal losses will stir some action but meets with a wall of denial from Stuart, who insists, “I don’t know anything. I’m nothing.”
When Daniel attempts to dredge up painful memories regarding Stuart’s family losses during the hijacking, it momentarily breaks through Stuart’s facade. This emotional rift hints at deeper issues. Stuart bemoans, “I was put on that plane to die. When that failed, I was left to take the fall…” It raises questions about his motives and the organization’s role in his life.
Field-Smith explains that Stuart’s return serves to explore the aftermath of KA29 and adds depth to Sam’s journey: “We aimed for something real that Sam could confront, revisiting the locker from season one.” This unfinished business between Stuart and Sam becomes a focal point, setting the stage for potential conflicts ahead.
Ending Explained: Sam’s Fate
With Daniel busy questioning Stuart, Marcia (Kristin Adams) ventures into the woods, while Olivia (Claire-Hope Asity) and Faber (Toby Jones) work their leads. Sam faces a dire situation, continuously trying to connect with the passengers who are skeptical of him.
He warns them, “If anyone gets off this train, you’ll all die. There are explosives.” As the panic rises, they discover eight bombs attached to the train. Trust quickly unravels again when Jess realizes Sam’s control over the bomb’s transceiver. As he strives to manage the chaos, the episode culminates with Sam attempting to save everyone from an impending explosion.
Viewers will have to wait for Episode 6 to uncover the resolution to this nail-biting cliffhanger. I can’t shake the feeling that the main character might not make it through, but I’m hoping for a twist. Let’s appreciate the thrill and keep our fingers crossed that Sam’s story continues.
The new episode of Hijack drops Wednesday on Apple TV.
