Italy's courageous attempt falls short against Sweden in the Olympics.

Milan Ice Hockey Match Highlights

The much-anticipated Olympic game, described as a “miracle on ice,” didn’t quite turn out that way.

In their opening match against Sweden, Italy initially found themselves trailing by a substantial 5.5 goals. Yet, just a little over four minutes into the game, they managed to shake things up by scoring. Then, remarkably, they equalized shortly into the second period, after Sweden seemed to have regained the upper hand.

As gutsy as their effort was, the Azzurri couldn’t pull off what would have been an enormous upset—think back to the U.S. beating the Soviet Union in Lake Placid. Ultimately, Sweden clinched a narrow 5-2 victory, with William Nylander’s goal at 16:46 of the second period proving decisive.

Interestingly, Italy is the only team in this tournament without any current or former NHL players, while Sweden boasted a roster of 25 players, all of whom have NHL experience—combined, they’ve played an impressive 16,880 games.

Filip Gustafsson, Sweden’s starting goalie, was somewhat of an underdog compared to Italy’s goalie, Damien Clara—who, by the way, was drafted 60th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2023. Clara’s performance was commendable; he made a staggering 46 saves throughout the match while Sweden piled on the shots, even preventing Elias Pettersson from continuing after an apparent foot injury.

The game atmosphere was electric, and Clara’s saves were a sight to behold. He had a solid showing despite being on the losing side, and it seems he might even earn himself an entry-level contract with the Ducks after this performance.

Gustafsson’s play early on raised eyebrows, particularly when he misplayed a dump-in just four minutes into the game, allowing Luca Frigo of Italy to capitalize. After Sweden took a 2-1 lead with goals from Gabriel Landeskog and Gus Forsling, Gustafsson was caught out again, resulting in another shot from Italy’s Matt Bradley finding the net.

2026 Winter Olympics Overview

The Swedes came into the tournament with ambitions to dethrone Canada and the United States for the gold medal. While they didn’t perform poorly, it seemed they lost some momentum as Italy continued to apply pressure.

Despite Italy’s efforts, they struggled to capitalize on Sweden’s mistakes and had difficulty mounting a comeback. Mika Zibanejad’s late goal, followed by Victor Hedman sealing the win with an empty-netter, underscored Sweden’s victory.
