Why Steph Curry might emerge as Hollywood's next big star

A new star might grace the big screen soon, but it won’t be the usual suspects like Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, or Timothée Chalamet. Instead, it’s Stephen Curry.

The two-time NBA MVP of the Golden State Warriors recently attended a screening for his animated film GOAT, which he produced and lent his voice to. The movie tells a story loosely inspired by his journey from an underprivileged high school athlete to an NBA superstar.

This particular screening took place in Oakland, and surprisingly, the discussions on the red carpet weren’t just about the film. They shifted towards the prospect of Curry pursuing acting once he hangs up his sneakers.

Co-director Tyree Dillihay praised Curry’s performance as the voice of Lenny the giraffe, stating, “In Steph’s words, he’s incredibly coachable.” Comedian W. Kamau Bell chimed in, calling him “a born entertainer.”

Hollywood has seen its share of basketball legends making the transition to film. Michael Jordan soared in “Space Jam,” Shaquille O’Neal had his own chaotic moments in “Kazam,” and Kevin Durant… well, “Thunderstruck” exists. The results have varied widely in quality.

But Curry seems to be on a different path. At 37, he’s set the groundwork. His production company, Unanimous Media, established in 2018, has worked on various projects, including “Breakthrough,” “Stephen Curry: Underrated,” and a Sundance Prize-winning documentary.

When asked about future acting possibilities, Curry expressed, “I don’t want to limit myself in terms of future possibilities either.”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has transformed his charisma into a billion-dollar enterprise, yet there’s something uniquely powerful about Curry: his sheer joy. The way he plays is almost cinematic, reminiscent of a superhero’s origin told through jump shots and celebrations.

So when Curry’s NBA career finally wraps up, it wouldn’t be surprising if he finds his next challenge at the box office.
