Gene Simmons on Rap and Hip-Hop in the Rock Hall of Fame

KISS co-founder Gene Simmons has expressed strong views on the inclusion of rap and hip-hop artists in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He noted that, in his perspective, these genres don’t fit within the traditional rock framework, saying, “I don’t come from the ghetto, and I don’t speak my language.”

During a podcast interview with LegendsNLeaders, Simmons argued that rap artists should seek recognition in different spaces, suggesting that their style of music doesn’t align with rock’s essence. He presented examples, comparing the recognition of bands like Iron Maiden, who can fill stadiums, versus the absence of Grandmaster Flash in the Hall of Fame.

Simmons shared an anecdote about a discussion he had with Ice Cube, acknowledging Ice Cube’s intelligence and accomplishments, but he maintained that their musical worlds don’t overlap. He stated, “I’ve said it many times in print: Hip-hop doesn’t belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The same goes for operas, symphonies, and orchestras.”

Furthering his point, Simmons remarked on the labels within music genres, associating hip-hop primarily with spoken word art. “There are some melodies, but by and large, it’s verbal,” he said.

Despite pushback from fans of prominent rap artists like Eminem and Jay-Z, Simmons remained steadfast. He emphasized music requires various distinctions, reflecting different creative approaches. He sarcastically questioned when Led Zeppelin would be welcomed into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame, pointing to the unique aspects of different music forms.

KISS gained induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, while Ice Cube’s group N.W.A. followed in 2016. Simmons has faced some backlash for his comments but insists he stands by his views. He acknowledged the complexities surrounding terms like “ghetto,” suggesting there can still be mutual respect even amidst disagreement.
