Senate Hearing Sparks Tensions Over ICE Protests
During a Senate hearing on Thursday, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison seemed to smile in response to accusations from Republican Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. Johnson claimed that Ellison had incited protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that put individuals at risk.
The focus has been on Minneapolis since the January shootings of Renee Good and Alex Preti by ICE and Border Patrol agents. At the Senate Homeland Security Council hearing, Johnson held Ellison partly responsible for these tragic events. He referenced the situation, emphasizing that Ellison should feel accountable for the two deaths that occurred.
Johnson remarked, “I can’t imagine suggesting that people should put themselves in danger and document it. As a government official, I would advise caution and seek collaboration with ICE to reduce risks. But instead, you did the opposite. Two individuals died because your guidance encouraged dangerous behavior, and now you’re exploiting their deaths.”
He continued, “It must be terrifying for law enforcement to know a colleague has been shot. Activists may even be armed. Is it any surprise that they’re now on high alert? You fostered that environment, and it’s an unfortunate situation.”
After Johnson concluded his remarks, he pointed out Ellison’s apparent amusement. Ellison responded, “Senator, are you looking for my reaction? Because your statements are incorrect. It was quite a theatrical display, albeit inaccurate.”
Johnson retorted, “You disgust me.”
Prior to the shooting, Good was actively volunteering with ICE Watch in Minnesota, helping to inform communities about immigration enforcement in their areas. Preti also allegedly filmed a Border Patrol agent moments before her death, according to verified videos by ABC News.
