Nathan Pare disqualified due to collision after finishing first in the Olympics

Nathan Paré’s Olympic Journey Cut Short

Nathan Paré’s run in the men’s snowboard cross championship was brief, to say the least.

The 21-year-old athlete from the U.S. found himself disqualified during the quarterfinals of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics after an unfortunate collision with Spain’s Lucas Eguibal. Paré was trying to climb from fourth to third place when things went sideways.

Eguibal, being 32 years old, lost his balance and fell into the snow from the impact. Meanwhile, Paré continued on and even crossed the finish line ahead of French competitors Jonas Cholet and Roan Bozzolo.

After the race, it was reported that a judge had reviewed the incident and deemed the collision to be intentional. “That’s insane,” Paré apparently reacted to the ruling.

The term “intentional” can significantly impact a competitor’s standing in sports, classified alongside involuntary and accidental incidents. It suggests a deliberate action to make contact with another competitor. Such actions can lead to a disqualification if they influence the race’s outcome, as per regulations.

Following the incident, Cholet and Bozzolo advanced to the semifinals but were ultimately defeated by Aidan Cholletto, Cholet’s younger brother. Aidan finished fourth in the final race, narrowly missing out on a medal.

Reflecting on Olympic Dreams

Nathan Paré had long aspired to take part in the Olympics, calling it a dream come true. In an Instagram post from January, he shared his journey, expressing gratitude for the support he received from his family and peers. It’s remarkable to think how much effort and perseverance went into reaching this point, with Paré highlighting the sacrifices made along the way.

The Winter Games will continue until February 22nd, 2026.
