Dog Guides Louisville Police to Missing 3-Year-Old: ‘A Blessing from God’

A police officer in Louisville has expressed gratitude to his dog, whom he named Lassie, and, importantly, to God for helping save a 3-year-old boy.

This uplifting tale kicked off in early January when the Louisville Metro Police received an emergency report about a missing child. Officers sprang into action, launching a comprehensive search that included helicopters, drones, and ground patrols throughout the neighborhood.

Despite their efforts, including knocking on residents’ doors for information, there was still no sign of the young boy.

That’s when a dog approached Officer Josh Thompson, who was making inquiries at one of the homes. The dog began barking energetically, catching Thompson’s attention.

“At first, I didn’t know the dog; I was unsure of its origins. The barking kept me on edge, but then it just started following me,” Thompson recalled in a video shared by the department.

As a self-professed dog enthusiast, he couldn’t ignore the pup and decided to follow it. “Let’s go check it out,” he could be heard saying, hinting that the dog seemed to have a sense of direction.

“The dog quickly turned and led me to the backyard,” Thompson mentioned, explaining how the canine instinctively guided him to the right spot.

When they reached the backyard, uncertainty lingered about where to go next, but the dog took them straight to a vehicle, revealing the terrified boy trapped inside. Thompson calmly instructed the child to unlock the door, and once free, the little boy leaped into his arms.

“I’ve never witnessed a happier child,” Thompson noted.

The officers and others affectionately dubbed the dog Lassie, inspired by the beloved television character known for its heroic rescues.

“That dog just stood there, as if saying ‘Come here, follow me.’ It’s a mystery to me where it came from. I patrol this area regularly, and I’d never seen that dog before, and I haven’t since,” Thompson said, emphasizing how blessed he felt that day.
