Nick Castellanos let go by Phillies as 13-year veteran seeks new MLB team

Phillies Release Fan Favorite Nick Castellanos

Before the upcoming Spring Training, a beloved Philadelphia Phillies player has been let go. Veteran MLB outfielder Nick Castellanos is now on the lookout for a new team as the Phillies announced his release on Thursday.

This decision came after the team’s manager indicated that Castellanos had been instructed “not to report to the team facility this week,” confirming the expectation that he would be traded or released soon. There have been discussions about his future with the club ever since news broke in October that he might need a new home as the 2026 season approaches.

The situation solidified further when the Phillies recently signed Adris Garcia and re-signed Kyle Schwarber during free agency. Castellanos, who is soon to turn 34, faced challenges last season, appearing in 147 games and posting a .250 batting average—his lowest in a full season. He accumulated 17 home runs and 72 RBIs but just didn’t seem to fit with the team’s plans anymore.

Given his $20 million contract, it seems the Phillies are ready to move on. Castellanos had spent four seasons with them after signing a five-year, $100 million deal following an All-Star appearance with the Cincinnati Reds in 2021. He made his second All-Star roster in 2023 after a successful season, hitting 29 home runs and driving in 106 runs across 157 games.

Castellanos began his professional journey with the Detroit Tigers, making his debut at 21 in 2013 and quickly becoming a regular before moving to Cincinnati in a trade in 2019.

With the Phillies looking to finalize their roster decisions soon, it appears Castellanos will need to find yet another team in Major League Baseball.
