Recently, a social media post from a close advisor to Mayor Zoran Mamdani has resurfaced, where he expresses frustration over not being granted access to airport lounges and luxury airline benefits. This has led to online critics labeling him a “champagne socialist.”
Matisse E. Roy Vigne, noted as a progressive figure in New York, vented his grievances in multiple X posts over the years, complaining about everything from business class seating to uncomfortable interactions with other passengers. He was particularly upset after being allegedly barred from American Airlines’ flagship lounge at Chicago O’Hare, which he claimed was not only disappointing but also disrespectful, considering he had chosen their service based on the expected perks.
“I looked at your web page and saw I was eligible for the flagship lounge, yet felt completely disrespected by your staff,” he stated, emphasizing his dissatisfaction with being relegated to the Admiral’s Club instead. “I don’t get it. Maybe they didn’t like my look,” he speculated, questioning why he was treated this way.
Vigne, who proudly calls himself an “aviation enthusiast,” didn’t hold back when sharing his experiences, expressing indignation over crowded planes and what he dubbed rude treatment during check-ins—especially when the airline agent mishandled his complimentary checked bags.
In another instance from July 2020, he complained about Swissair’s incomplete beverage service, noting that passengers were left thirsty and criticizing the airline for its poor first impression. “You only get one chance at that,” he remarked.
Criticism online was swift, as social media users branded Vigne, who is set to graduate from Columbia University in 2024, as elitist. Remarks included comments on his entitlement, with one user even suggesting he be placed on a no-fly list due to his complaints about airline standards and service.
As for Mamdani’s office, there’s been no immediate comment regarding the backlash against Vigne and his posts.
