PK Saban Defends Wayne Gretzky Amid Criticism
Recently, former NHL player PK Saban addressed the backlash surrounding Wayne Gretzky’s ties with both President Donald Trump and the sport itself. Saban made these comments in light of Gretzky’s presence at Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, which marked the president’s second term.
Notably, back in 2024, Trump had hinted at the prospect of appointing a “great man” as governor of Canada’s “51st state,” which stirred up some controversies between the U.S. and Canada. This certainly added tension to the ongoing rivalry in hockey, especially with the upcoming four-nation competition set for 2025 and the Winter Olympics just around the corner.
Saban, in an interview with a local paper, took a stand against those criticizing Gretzky. He questioned their contributions to hockey and suggested that in today’s world dominated by opinions, everyone seems to have something to say, but he believes that’s not his concern. “Wayne did his duty,” he remarked, defending Gretzky’s legacy and dedication to the sport.
Moreover, Saban highlighted how Gretzky has been an influential figure, noting, “He was in the trenches. He went to Nagano. He put Hockey Canada together.” He expressed sympathy for those who feel betrayed by Gretzky’s association with Trump, emphasizing that he himself finds it hard to criticize Gretzky’s choices.
Furthermore, Saban pointed out that the engagement between Trump and Canadian officials may have actually played a role in the heightened interest in the upcoming showdown. “Just the fact that he was talking about it…a lot of people started asking, ‘Why is President Trump talking about this hockey game?'” he explained. It was, perhaps unexpectedly, a significant moment that underscored the influence of political leaders on sports and could change the nature of hockey events in the future.
As the conversation continues to unfold, it appears that the interactions between politicians and sports may just be as compelling as the games themselves. Saban, now serving as an executive producer for the documentary series “Rivals: Four Nations Showdown,” hopes to explore this landscape further.
