Celebrities avoid discussing politics in tense US political atmosphere

As politics increasingly intersects with media and entertainment, a few Hollywood celebrities have opted to steer clear of political discourse amid America’s ongoing culture wars. Actors like Kevin James, Neil Patrick Harris, and Michelle Yeoh seem to actively avoid commenting on U.S. politics.

In an interview with Variety, Kevin James explained his long-standing avoidance of political discussions. He stated, “When it comes to politics, there are far more experts than me. I want to focus on what I can do and provide a fun and heartwarming break from the craziness of the world.” He believes that while stress is part of life, people also deserve an escape. “You have to look around you and see the good in things…” he added, emphasizing the need for joy and hope.

James is known for being “famously apolitical,” concentrating instead on making people laugh. Similarly, Harris recently chose not to engage when faced with a political question during a press conference for his movie “Sunny Dancer.” When asked whether films should take a political stance, he shared that he prefers to create art that doesn’t revolve around politics, as it fosters genuine human connections.

Harris expressed, “I think we live in a divided world… as an artist, I’m always interested in doing things that have nothing to do with politics.” This reflects a desire to focus on storytelling that resonates on a human level instead of navigating complex political landscapes. When questioned further about politics, he acknowledged his personal views but maintained that his role was more about fostering inclusivity than making political statements.

Conversely, Michelle Yeoh, during a press event at the Berlin Film Festival, also declined to delve into U.S. political matters. She remarked, “I don’t think I’m really in a position to speak about the political situation in the United States… we want to focus on what’s important to us: the movies.” Yeoh emphasized that movies serve as a means for people to gather, laugh, and celebrate, reinforcing the importance of this tradition amid distractions from the outside world.

Amid these voices, others like Billie Eilish have not shied away from political engagement. Eilish’s brother, Finneas O’Connell, defended her after she faced backlash for comments made during her Grammy acceptance speech, showcasing the divide in how public figures choose to approach political topics.
