Why Bright Horizons (BFAM) Shares Are Dropping Significantly Today

Shares of Bright Horizons (NYSE:BFAM), a childcare and education company, plummeted by 19.3% during morning trading after the company issued a weak earnings forecast for 2026, overshadowing a profit beat in the fourth quarter.

While Bright Horizons reported fourth-quarter adjusted profits and revenue that exceeded analysts’ expectations, investors were clearly more concerned about the disappointing future outlook. The company is expecting full-year 2026 sales to fall between $3.075 billion and $3.125 billion, with adjusted earnings per share estimated between $4.90 and $5.10. Unfortunately, this midpoint is lower than Wall Street’s expectations, hinting at potential challenges.

It’s interesting how the stock market sometimes overreacts to news, and perhaps this steep drop could present a buying opportunity for investors looking at solid stocks. Should now be the moment to consider Bright Horizons?

Historically, Bright Horizons hasn’t shown much volatility, with just nine price movements greater than 5% over the past year. Therefore, such a drastic change signals a significant shift in how the market views the company.

Three months ago, we noted a major dip when the stock fell 5.3% after analysts at Goldman Sachs and BMO Capital adjusted their price targets downward. This came despite Bright Horizons performing better than expected in the third quarter and raising its full-year outlook. Goldman Sachs cut its target from $146 to $130, while BMO Capital revised theirs from $130 to $124. Both firms still hold a positive outlook on the stock. Remarkably, the company saw a 26% year-on-year growth, primarily due to its high-margin backup care division. BMO Capital indicated that the lowered targets are just more in line with current market multiples, suggesting a reevaluation despite the strong performance.

Year-to-date, Bright Horizons has fallen 34.7% and is currently trading at $64.80, which is a significant 50.7% below its 52-week peak of $131.50 reached in May 2025. For perspective, someone who invested $1,000 in Bright Horizons five years ago would now see that investment reduced to about $356.66.

It’s noteworthy that other companies like Microsoft, Alphabet, Coca-Cola, and Monster Beverage all started as modest growth stories capitalizing on larger trends. Meanwhile, we’ve pinpointed several businesses in a promising AI semiconductor sector that Wall Street hasn’t fully recognized yet.
