Ilia Marinin has finally opened up following a disappointing Olympic performance.
The 21-year-old American figure skater, who was a favorite, fell short of winning gold in the men’s figure skating final last Friday. Just a few days later, he took to social media to discuss the “invisible battle” he’s enduring after the disappointing results.
In a video he shared, moments of Marinin enjoying skating are juxtaposed with a clip of him visibly distressed, holding his head in his hands after his fall. The video ends with a date—”February 21, 2026″—hinting at something significant to come.
In one of his posts, he remarks on how even those who seem resilient are often grappling with unseen struggles. He reflects that negative online comments can weigh heavily, overshadowing even joyful memories. He shares feelings of being overwhelmed by pressure, leading to that inevitable moment of failure, encapsulated in his story.
On Monday, Marinin reiterated his sentiments, suggesting he’s been feeling quite low following his performance. He shared some worrying thoughts in his posts, touching on feelings of exhaustion and pain.
Fans quickly rallied on social platforms, offering words of encouragement like, “You’re incredible” and “You’ll always be a champion.”
Marinin, after falling twice during the competition, ended up finishing eighth with a score of 264.49 points. Despite his clear disappointment, he graciously acknowledged Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidlov as the gold medal winner.
Right after his performance, he expressed that the moment felt final—his first loss in over two years. He also mentioned, somewhat candidly, that he wouldn’t have skated in the same way had he been a part of the Beijing Olympic team at seventeen.

He went on to explain how, during competitions, the mind can easily become cluttered, leading to a loss of focus. His day had started well, he felt good, and he had expected to trust his usual process.
Marinin isn’t alone among American athletes facing disappointment at these Olympics. Snowboarder Chloe Kim and alpine skiers Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn also fell short of expectations. In contrast, speed skater Jordan Stoltz has excelled, contributing significantly to the U.S. tally by earning two golds, placing the country in fourth overall.
However, Marinin’s struggle seems particularly pronounced as he copes with this tough outcome.
