Miami Dolphins Clean-Up and Quarterback Decisions
Miami is in the midst of a significant clean-up, but there’s a major issue still hanging in the balance.
The Dolphins are set to part ways with some high-priced players like Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb. Right now, the focus in South Beach is on what to do with Tua Tagovailoa.
According to reporter Jordan Schultz, Tagovailoa could be released if the team can’t find a trade partner for the former Alabama standout.
There’s strong speculation about Tagovailoa’s future with the Dolphins. If a trade doesn’t happen, he’ll likely be released, opening the door for him to seek a starting position elsewhere in the NFL.
All indications suggest a split between Tagovailoa and the Dolphins, which would mean a hefty dead cap hit of $67.4 million in 2026 if he’s released after June 1st. This comes just two seasons into his four-year, $212 million contract.
Moreover, the dead cap is expected to be around $31.8 million in 2027.
The Dolphins face a significant financial burden from dead cap space, with Hill and Chubb combining for 20 million in dead cap this year alone if their release is designated after June 1. If released immediately, the cost would exceed $40 million.
The team already has $97.8 million in dead money on their books and anticipates Tagovailoa’s situation will take time to resolve.
Currently, Miami has just $9.6 million in salary cap space, meaning they’ll likely head into the season with their existing roster, aside from potentially a few minor free agent additions and incoming draft picks.
In the 2026 NFL Draft, the Dolphins hold the 11th pick overall, the 43rd pick, and three third-round selections.
Additionally, new coach Jeff Hafley is expected to shift into a role in the scouting department, highlighting how a solid draft can turn a team’s fortunes around.
However, if the team decides to move on from Tagovailoa, they’ll need to figure out their offensive strategy with only Quinn Ewers listed as their current quarterback.
Last season, Tagovailoa recorded 20 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, and 2,660 passing yards before being benched for the final three games.
