Melissa Gilbert Shares Family Challenges and Return to Work

In a heartfelt post on social media, Melissa Gilbert reflected on the tough times her family has faced recently. The actress, known for her role in “Little House on the Prairie,” revealed that she is stepping back into her position as the chief creative officer of the Modern Prairie brand, emphasizing her commitment to supporting her loved ones during this challenging period.

This month marked a significant moment for her husband, Timothy Busfield, who was indicted by a grand jury in New Mexico on multiple charges related to child sexual abuse. It’s been a tumultuous journey since his arrest on these charges back in January.

Gilbert expressed how essential it was for her to take a break to focus on family, saying, “It was a much-needed time for me, a time to be present, work on what matters most, and gather strength in a season that has not been easy.” She emphasized the importance of family during these hard times, noting, “Family means everything to me.”

She also acknowledged the support she has received from a “wonderful community” that has surrounded her with kindness and encouragement. “The women of this community who show up every day, not just for me, but for each other, that’s what Modern Prairie is about,” she stated.

Gilbert articulated that returning to her work does not diminish her dedication to her family. “Returning to this work is important to me,” she noted, mentioning how engaging in this role has helped strengthen her resolve. She added that it’s more than just a job—it’s about forming connections and sharing strength, especially in tough times.

On a legal note, Busfield, who is 68, was the first to hand himself in. He had been held with no bail initially but was later released, under specific conditions, including a prohibition on contact with minors.

Allegations against him involve claims made by 11-year-old twins who accused him of inappropriate conduct on the set of a film project. These serious charges led to his indictment in early February.

As the district attorney stressed the importance of protecting children and ensuring justice, Busfield’s attorney argued that the case lacks sufficient evidence. “The indictment was not unexpected. As the saying goes, grand juries indict ham sandwiches,” he said, indicating that the prosecution might be reaching.

Busfield plans to defend himself vigorously, looking forward to addressing the charges in court, where he believes the actual evidence will be examined. His first arraignment is set for March 10.
