Mural to Honor Murdered Ukrainian Woman Funded by Elon Musk
In September, Elon Musk announced he would support a mural dedicated to Irina Zalutka, a Ukrainian woman tragically murdered on a public train in Charlotte, North Carolina.
A mural was recently unveiled in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, as part of the Remember Irina memorial initiative, led by Elizabeth Trykin. This striking artwork measures 147 feet in width and 20 feet in height and can be found at the Charleston Boulevard and Las Vegas Boulevard intersection.
“Evil can’t see policy. Evil can’t see right or left. Evil is just evil,” Trykin noted during the event.
Trykin mentioned that over 20 large-scale murals have been completed in various U.S. cities so far, with even more projects planned for Las Vegas. “We’ve had more than 900 artists reach out to us wanting to be involved,” she said in a statement to local news.
Musk joined the cause after being encouraged by Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe, who also contributed $500,000 of his own funds. Some voices on the right have expressed disbelief regarding the limited coverage of this violent crime, suggesting possible political biases.
“I’m donating $1 million,” Musk declared at the time of his involvement.
A representative from McCabe confirmed the donation details, and both men have followed through with their financial pledges.
Guia Duran, the graffiti artist behind the Las Vegas mural, stated that the project wasn’t meant to have political implications. “It’s disappointing that politics has to enter into everything,” Duran expressed. “All we really need is to unify and stop turning everything into a political issue, especially when it comes to someone losing their life in such a tragic manner. Why should this be political? It’s simply evil.”
DeCarlos Brown, 34, faces charges for Zalutka’s murder and may be eligible for the death penalty if found guilty. The chilling incident was recorded by surveillance cameras on public transport.
“Evil can’t see policy. Evil can’t see right or left. Evil is just evil,” Duran reiterated, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness and positivity through the mural.
